Dalen 05 January 2000

To all international SOLIS schools

First of all I want to wish you all a Happy New Year!

I hope most of the SOLIS-equipment don’t suffer from any 2KY problems. At my school everything worked fine. Even the SOLGRAF-program is OK.

ISREE2000 Registration

The main information this time is about ISREE2000. For those of you who want to make a presentation at the Symposium the abstract must be sent before February 1. For those of you that plan to participate at the Symposium the registration must be sent before April 1. But we want you to registrate as early as possible. See more information at the web: http://www.dalen.vgs.no/isree2000/

If you plan to send students to Oslo , either to the Symposium or to Our Wonderful Sun, please let us know us soon as possible. We will work to get funding to both students and teachers, but at the moment we can’t promise anything. But feel free to send an application. Then it is easier for us to find some sponsors.

Sunny greetings

SOLIS measurements

We would like you to send the results to the SOLIS-database directly. I remind you that it is possible to get the new program and password from Lars Olav Tveita (lars.olav.tveita@sksk.mil.no). Still I want to have the results for my monthly report. At least the average value per month. You can send that number by email to me karlth@online.no.

Discussion on Internet

SOLIS in Finland, by Ilkka Koivistoinen, has established a discussion group on Internet where you can pose questions or inform about your projects. Use English so all your international friends can understand the content. The address is: http://solis.wwnet.fi/soliscollabora/Default.htm

Workshop

Me and Einar Oterholm had a one day workshop for 80 10-th graders at Lena ungdomsskole on November 18. They will do projects about Renewable Energy and go to Oslo in June next year. Look at the homepage for Our wonderful Sun for more pictures. If you have some projects you are working with, please send me a picture and a short description and we will publish it on the web.

Sunny greetings

To all SOLIS schools

SOLIS-measurements

This time we have data for May, June, July and August. We observe that we have most data from May. Some schools have reported that they have had problems during the summer and lost data. From those who have data I hope to have them in the next report.

International SOLIS-seminar in October

The seminar will be arranged as planned. You can find an updated program on http://solis.wwnet.fi/.

The Latvia-Norway cooperation

From 10-13 of October over 20 teachers from Dalen will visit our twin school in Latvia, Valmiera. We all look forward to meet our friends in Valmiera. Other schools have reported student and teacher exchange visits.

 ISREE2000

This time you will find the brochure for the Symposium in Oslo June 15-18 2000. We hope to see you all there!

Solar Eclipse

If some of you have good recordings of the eclipse on August 11, please send them to me. You will find an example from Bjerknes in this report.

THE SCHOOL PHYSICS PROGRAM in Finland

Ari Lampinen has written an article about this program. SOLIS is one part of the program and the article are also of general interest for Physics teachers.

Sunny greetings

SOLIS-measurements

This month we have got 30 reports. That is 79%.

International SOLIS-seminar in October

We have over 20 participants from Norway. The number from Finland and Latvia is not known yet, but we hope that many will find it interesting. From Finland 3-4 schools have already registrated.

From England Paul Rowley, BP Solar Energy education Coordinator, will participate. He will inform us more about the initiative: Global Solar Partner.

We look forward to see you all in Latvia!

The Latvia-Norway cooperation

In this project we see a lot of student- and teacher exchanges at the moment. To me and Tomass this has been very interesting. And we are happy to announce that The Foreign Ministry and The Ministry of Education has decided to support the project also in 1999. Probably due to all the good reports from 98. So please prepare as detailed report from all the events in 99.

Testing of solar cookers

In one magazine I have found an standard procedure for testing of solar cookers. Hopefully this can be to some help in a student project.

ISREE2000

Before summer I will send you a brochure about the Symposium in 2000. You will also find information about the student competition "Our Wonderful Sun".

Use of Internet

As far as we can see very few use the internet to send data. Hopefully more will use this opportunity. It is really quite easy!

This will be the last report this school year. Next report from you will then be in September with data from May, June, July and August.

Be sure that nobody turns off the computer!

I wish you all a well deserved summer vacation!

Sunny greetings

Karl Torstein

SOLIS-measurements

This month there are 32 reports (84%).

International SOLIS-seminar in October 99

We plan to make an international seminar in Riga 7-10 of October where teachers from Norway, Finland and Latvia can meet and discuss/learn more about solar energy. We will focus on student projects in Renewable energy. In addition we will invite scientists to tell about the recent development in solar energy worldwide. You will get a detailed program later on.

The main goal of the seminar is to inspire you to do projects together with your students the next schoolyear and participate at the exhibition in Oslo in June 2000 at the International Symposium on Renewable Energy Education. We want two teachers from each school to participate.

The Finnish teachers can be in contact with Illka Koivistoinen and the Latvian teachers can contact Tomass Romanovskis.

To all SOLIS schools

This time it is a lot of important practical information, so please read everything carefully!

SOLIS-measurements This month there are 34 reports (89%). Good!

SOLIS SCHOOL INFORMATION

We will make an overview of the SOLIS schools on the Internet. Lars Olav has made an database where all the data until December 98 is stored. We ask all the schools to send in the information asked for in the form (attached to this letter).  You can of course send the information by email to lars.olav.tveita@sksk.mil.no .

SOLIS via Internett

Now it is possible to send SOLIS-data directly via Internet. To do that you need the last version of SOLIS to make database files. In addition you need a password. Send an email to lars.olav.tveita@sksk.mil.no and you will get the necessary information. To be sure that someone will try this, we challenge of course all of you, but particularly Vestvågøy, Heimdal, Bjertnes, Møglestu, Nykarleby, Preili, Jekabpils and Jelgava.

NB! You must still send the results to me as usual.

Mailing list
It is also established a listserver for use in SOLIS. That means if you send a message to solis-l@lists.zoo.uib.no then all in the network will get your message. Then you understand that it is important for you to fill in the school information form, so you can be a part of the network.

In addition we have an email you can use when you want to publish something (projects, new URLs …) on SOLIS homepage: solis@zoo.uib.no

International cooperation

I also send you an invitation for collaboration with schools in Scotland. In this project it is even possible to get some equipment from BP. Read the paper and see if it is of interest for your students.

Sunny greetings

Karl Torstein
